PRESS RELEASE
Lecture by the lexicologist
Jean Pruvost
Drink his words!
Friday, October 28, 6pm – Alliance Française invites you to a lecture given in French by the lexicologist Jean Pruvost about: « Les mots du vin » / « Words of Wine ».
The lecture will take place at Dalhousie University, at the French department (McCaine Building, room 1102, 6135 University Avenue, Halifax). A reception will follow.
Jean Pruvost is a professor at the University of Cergy-Pontoise (France), where he teaches lexicology and lexicography. He also directs the CNRS [National Center for Scientific Research] laboratory, Métadif (Lexicons, Dictionaries, IT), which is devoted to dictionaries.
Le Vin (The Wine) by Jean Pruvost
What are the very first French definitions for wine? From the 16th century to this day, countless terms have been used to describe it, archaic French words such as resbaudissant, trouble-cerveau, antidérapant, brouilleménage, chasse-cousin, cheval des poètes, or vin bourru, vin de mère goutte or vin théologal. There are literally hundreds of formulas, expressions and proverbs to be found in ancient French dictionaries, each providing fascinating clues to the history and mystery of wine.
Copies of “Le vin” by Jean Pruvost would be available for sale.
This lecture is part of a Canadian tour which is carried out in partnership with the General
Delegation of Alliance Française in Canada.
This event is also organized in partnership with Dalhousie University, Saint-Mary’s University, Mount-Saint-Vincent University and the Association of Translators and Interpreters of Nova Scotia (ATINS).
